Was born in Klaipėda in the working class family.
In 1975, he graduated from the former 5th Secondary school. In the same year he entered Vilnius University, Faculty of Physics, however in 1976 he enrolled in Vilnius Technical School No 47 and graduated from it in 1977, received cum laude diploma and acquired a profession of a photographer. At the same time he was involved in the activities of VU Students' Photo Club.
In 1979, Algimantas Kalvaitis returned from the Soviet army and started working as a photographer in BGAK "Gražina"
From 1981 to 1995 he worked as a photographer in Klaipėdos "Rytas" printing house.
Since 1995, he was working as a designer and scanning expert in the daily "Klaipėda".
In 2002 he started working as a photojournalist in the same daily newspaper. Since the end of 2002 Algimantas Kalvaitis has been working as an individual photo artist.
Currently he is mostly collaborating with the daily "Verslo žinios", various publishing and printing houses. He is working according to author contracts: photography, layout, compiling publications.
Married in 1984, a son was born in 1987. In 1993, the marriage was terminated.
Since 1993 he has been the member of the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers.
